Someone will call you to give you a time for your first appointment at the clinic.
What to bring to your appointment
Please bring the following to your appointment:
- Health card
- All medications, including over-the-counter drugs
- A snack
- People with diabetes should bring a snack or meal, insulin, and related supplies
How long will your appointment be?
First appointments take longer than follow-up appointments.
- Please arrive 15 minutes before your first appointment to complete intake forms
- First appointments can take two hours or more. After your visit to the clinic, you will likely have blood tests taken.
- Follow-up appointments usually take 30 minutes
We do our best to stay on time. Unfortunately, your appointment may be delayed by unforeseen circumstances. We recommend that you come prepared for delays. For example, make sure your arrangements for things like babysitting, elder care, and parking can accommodate a longer than usual appointment.
Before you leave
At the end of your first appointment, the nurse will give you an information package. If you do not get one, feel free to ask for it.
After every appointment, the nurse will tell you about your next visit. Be sure you understand what is going to happen next. For example, know the time and place of your next visit or if someone will call you with this information.
If you are unsure about what your next steps are, do not be afraid to ask a member of your team. We are here to help you.
About phone calls
We understand that reaching us by phone can sometimes be difficult. Often our phone lines are busy or go to the voice message centre if our clinic staff are helping other patients.
We make every effort to return your call within 24 hours. Our staff will try to reach you two times. If we are not able to reach you directly – and you do not have an answering machine for us to leave a message – you may need to call us again.
Treating and caring for people with cancer takes a well-coordinated team. Your Oncology and Malignant Haematology Clinics team consists of dedicated health care professionals working together for you and with you.
A dedicated team of medical oncologists, haematologists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medication reimbursement specialists, registered dietitians, social workers, spiritual health workers, and volunteers will care for you and help you and your family.
