At Markham Stouffville Hospital, you can choose to be cared for by an obstetrician, family physician, or midwife:

Obstetrician – This is a physician who specializes in providing complete pregnancy and childbirth care for low- or high-risk pregnancies.

Family physician – Some family physicians are trained in obstetrics and have privileges at Markham Stouffville Hospital, and can provide complete care throughout pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum stages. If you would like to use a family physician for your delivery, use our website to search for a family physician who has training in obstetrics. You may also have your primary care provider refer you to our Family Physician Pregnancy Clinic, or contact the Health for All Family Health Team online, or Markham Family Health Team to find a care provider.

Family Physician Pregnancy Clinic – The family physician teams at Health for All and Markham Family Health Team are seeing patients for antenatal and postpartum care in collaboration with our Obstetricians, who will be present for the birth of your baby.

Midwife – This is a registered health care professional who provides full primary care for low-risk pregnancies either in your home or at Markham Stouffville Hospital, as well as postpartum care. You can select our Oak Valley Health Midwifery Program or community midwife clinic from one of our three partners: Midwifery Services of Durham, Markham Stouffville Midwives, or Uxbridge Community Midwives.

Your family physician can help you select a health care provider who best meets your expectations regarding your pregnancy and birth journey.
